Today

Today I mowed the lawn. To those of you who know me, this is a HUGE deal. You see, I Don’t Mow. Ever. I guess I feel lucky that I grew up between two brothers, because they always had to mow. And now I have a husband who likes to mow. (Love you, sweetie!!)

Now I love to be outside. And I love working in the yard. But I HATE to mow. This is perhaps the third time in my life I’ve actually done it, and guess what? I still hate it! It took me like 2 hours plus to mow. Now, mind you, I also mowed up an extraordinary amount of leaves, mulched and bagged them, but still, 2 hours?! Come on! You won’t believe the amount of TV Marci had to endure while I finished the dang thing. Poor girl!

I am shouting it out for the world to hear: I AM A HORRIBLE MOWER!! So honey, please, don’t ever ask me to do it, you are awesome at it, and I really, really, really appreciate your mowing expertise!

Thanksgiving

We have had such a lovely weekend. Thanksgiving morning was spent with the kids playing games and puttering about the house while the smell of the fresh cranberries simmering on the stove filled our home. We had a lovely dinner with my family before I had to be off to work.

Friday, we got our tree as is our tradition. The children couldn’t wait to decorate it, so Saturday while Chris and the children had a paper ball war, I put all the lights on the tree. Paper flying around me and children ducking for cover behind the tree. John and Marci were allowed to decorate the entire tree while I supervised. Ok, I actually just sat on the couch and watched, not really caring how many ornaments were piled onto a branch. It turned out lovely. I guess there are definite advantages to having such a random assortment of ornaments.

Oh, I didn’t mention, Chris gave me my Christmas gift early this year. A new camera! Perfect. Now hopefully I can learn to use it before Christmas morning. I am already on page 30 of the 224 paged users manual. So hopefully my pictures will start improving!

My eldest turned SEVEN today!! Much of the day was spent remembering all the fun the past seven years have been. John is my only boy. My “mommy’s boy.” The one that made me Mother. He is always so considerate. So observant. So thoughtful. John will always hold a special place in my heart.

For his birthday, we all took turns asking John questions. Here are his answers.

Once again we enjoyed a wonderful Halloween. Today, while Chris was at work, The children and I were busy. The girls and I went to John’s Halloween parade and party at school.

We then went to Trick-or-Treat at Harmony’s work, then surprised my dad at his work. It was so much fun. When Chris got home, we Trick-or-Treated our way to Grandma and Grandpa’s house where we enjoyed our annual Halloween Party. Always fun. The kids were especially adorable this year.

This year we attended two pumpkin carving parties. So fun! We let John carve his own and he did such an amazing job! He was content for hours. Best activity yet. Here are some pictures from our fun day.

A Time to Serve

We were blessed with such a wonderful summer. It was so fun to have John home with us all day. This spring, I was struggling with depression in the worst way. Finally it was too much and I was put on Zoloft by my doctor. Sweet, blessed Zoloft. It has helped so much. I am now feeling like my old self. I am once again productive. I am enjoying my kids again. I am enjoying my life.

Because the spring was so hard, this summer has been full of healing. Making up for lost time with my kids. Relaxing. It has been wonderful.

Sadly, just when feeling back to my old self, I found myself struggling again. I feel that I am just “mommy” and don’t have my own identity beyond being a mom. If left for a day to myself, I wouldn’t even know what to do. I have also been feeling so spiritually disconnected. It is so discouraging to lose yourself and your connection with deity.

I kept thinking that I needed a class or something to fill my time and to help me find myself. I still think that there are a few classes I’d like to take, but this didn’t seem like it was enough to fix my distraught feelings. Then I was driving alone in my car and inspiration struck. So clearly it came to me that I need to serve.

I have decided that once a month as a family, we are going to do a service project. It doesn’t need to be big or involved. It may even be as simple as picking up trash at the park. I just need to serve, and I’d love to include the children in it as well.

I presented this idea to the family, and they were so excited! They were full of suggestions. We will be adding all ideas to a list, and choosing one a month. I feel so happy. I know that this is what I need to be doing now. I am so blessed that even though I feel disconnected, my Heavenly Father is always aware of my struggles. He is willing to help. He knows just what I need.

Lazy, Lazy Summer

This summer has been so wonderful! Much playing in the yard, the hose constantly on, children often naked. A few parties, lunch with friends, many books read, one trip to the zoo. So, so lazy. Other than a piano lesson each Monday, our days have been left unplanned, and unscheduled. It has made for so much relaxing, much spontaneity, and so much fun! Hooray for summer!

Thankfully I grew up with this mantra and now my children live by it too.

It was a wonderful day in which we were able to throw the windows and doors wide open. The kids traipsed in and out of the house as they pleased while I puttered about in the yard. I spent about 5 hours clearing out the weeds and grass that have taken over the front flower beds. My neighbors are pleased, as many have already stopped by to comment on how great it’s looking.

John and Marci were thrilled to death that I let them turn on the hose and make a big mud pit to stomp about in. And all that wood you see around them--it is our new play set!

Sand should be coming soon and then you are all welcome to come over to help move it into place.

A Whole New World

Gabrielle is now crawling and sitting up. She mastered both this past week. She has been so much later to hit these milestones than her siblings, and I am so glad! It is so nice to have a child that is content to be a baby a little longer. She may be our last, and I am more than happy to enjoy her babyness as long as possible.

Also, now that she is more mobile, she loves to crawl over to this great low window and check out what is going on outside.

Beautiful Day

So I thought that following the last post, I'd post an update of my Mother's Day.

I was awoken (late) by two happy, bouncing children who came bearing greetings of "Happy Mother's Day!" and a Menu to "Cafe Mom." The menu contained a long list of breakfast options and I just had to check-off what I wanted. The children then rushed downstairs and helped their dad prepare my feast which was brought up to bed on a tray. Chris, ever-so-wisely, included lots of extra bacon so I could share with my biggest fans.

Following a lovely breakfast, we all got ready and headed off to church. It was sheer joy having us all, including Chris, together. After church we just enjoyed on another. The children were extra careful not to cry, whine, or argue with each other. Nice! That evening, Chris made us all steaks on the grill.

The only thing that would have made the day sweeter would have been sharing it with my mother.

Chris, please remember this day. You can repeat it every mothers day for the rest of my life and I will be the luckiest woman alive.

We had a lovely day. Everyone wearing green but Marci. That girl doesn’t own a single green item of clothing. Thankfully she was saved from a daytime of pinching by a green headband.

For dinner we enjoyed Irish Beef Stew and Homemade Bread. My sweet sister Harmony spent the evening with us and took a few pictures of us enjoying dinner.

Remember when I posted about my favorite mascara? Well shortly after that post, the store stopped carrying it. Angry. Since then I have been on a quest to find a replacement. Many, many tubes have been purchased and discarded.

This past week, a bout of pink eye went through our home, and I was forced to throw out yet another tube. Today, I pulled out a recent purchase and am pleased with the result.

Now, my lashes are skimpy. Like pull-out-a-magnifying-glass-to-see-them skimpy. But look…

Today as I was walking home from the bus stop, I saw this:

Not just bulbs starting to push their heads up through the ground, but actual, glorious, flowers! Are you as excited as I am? Time to do some of my favorite things: Spring Cleaning, and Gardening. Yes, I know that it may still be a tad early for actually planting my garden but I think it’s high time I get planning.

It’s definitely not to early to start spring cleaning. I’ve already started. This year, I am making a list of the things that irritate me the most in the home: too many junk drawers, drawer too small for the cooking utensils, too much “storage” under my bed... Hopefully I can tackle this list of annoyances and in so doing, enjoy less stress this year.

One tradition we have is that on Christmas Eve, we head outside and enjoy a winter picnic. We have been doing this since I was a little girl, and now enjoy it with the children. This year we went up to a picnic area at the bottom of Big Cottonwood Canyon. We take snowshoes and sleds and build a big roaring fire. We prepare the food ahead of time, and just enjoy. It is always so peaceful, and this year we were quite alone. It is magic.

Following the picnic, we dress in our Norwegian sweaters and go to a Langeland family party. We enjoy a Norwegian feast and even get a surprise visit from Santa. Unfortunately I didn’t take my camera, so I have no pictures. What are your traditions?

John’s 6th Birthday, November 2010

This year we let John have a friend party for the first time. For his friends, he chose all cousins. The day before his party, Gabrielle was really sick, so we had to postpone the party for a week. John was so sweet, and didn’t complain about this at all. The delay made the party fall well after his actual birthday, so on his birthday we had cake and ice cream with our immediate family.

John chose a robot theme for his friend party. When the guests arrived, we made robots with foam stickers, pipe cleaners, and sequins. We then played robot party games, and made robots out of toothpicks and marshmallows. The store where I usually buy cakes closed down, so I made a cake from a mix and even used frosting from a can. My niece raved that it was the best cake she’d ever had. I am glad she was so easy to please! Our first ‘friend’ party was a success and fun was had by all.

Valentines day is usually rather simple at our home. Gifts, if there are any, are usually small. This year Chris received a box of a favorite breakfast cereal with a card. (See, I wasn’t kidding).

Although gifts may be small, my love for Chris is anything but. I feel like the luckiest girl alive. I married my best friend. We have been married 13 years now, and still our love continues to grow, to deepen. Chris, thanks for marrying me. I love you!

Did you get a chance to see this over the weekend? I did and it left me totally on fire. I know that it has never consumed me is this way before. I am anxiously awaiting a printed copy so that I can highlight and make notes all over it. I have already gone online and relistened to some of the talks and can't wait to enjoy past conference talks. I have been struggling with some things lately, and over the weekend, I received answers like never before.

There are huge changes coming around here. Choices have been made that are not easy. I am feeling utterly terrified.

New Jammies

I’m not sure why Marci is making this face, probably because I made her pose for a photo before breakfast. She doesn’t like to do anything before she eats breakfast. I love that it is cool enough at night to wear the footie pj’s.

Now that John is in school, he catches the bus at 7 am. Marci has been sleeping until 8, and I am really enjoying the hour to myself. It is amazing how much more productive I am in the morning!

St. George

Just before school started, we packed up the little ones and headed down to St. George. Yes, it was 105 degrees the entire time we were there but the air conditioning was fabulous. I loved just lazing about enjoying the end of summer.

We loved playing at the water park downtown.

It rained when we went to Zions. Thankfully the rain passed quickly and left us with beautiful waterfalls and frogs everywhere.

2 Months Old

Gabrielle is now 2 months old and is growing so fast! Today at her doctors appointment, she was 14 lbs. 1 oz. and 23 1/2 inches!

Gabrielle has started sleeping through her 3 am feed, so I am usually able to get five to six hours of sleep at night. She does still have an occasional all-nighter keeping me sufficiently sleep deprived.

Gabrielle is so strong and can hold her head up with little assistance, but is still not able to pick it up if laying on her tummy. She is also strong enough to get herself out of most swaddling wraps. She likes to sleep with both arms up by her head.

Gabrielle’s hair is usually crazy and sticks straight up unless it is immediately following her bath, when it is in cute little curls.

Gabrielle really wants to suck her thumb, she is getting her hand to her mouth often and and occasionally succeeds in getting a thumb in. She has a love-hate relationship with her pacifier. It often evokes little baby tantrums. Gabrielle is by far my fussiest baby earning her the nickname “Crabby Gabby.” This makes it all the more frustrating that her pacifier is not more readily accepted.

Gabrielle loves John, smiling, being outside, lots of attention, her swing, being swaddled, eating all of the time, her Mommy, sleeping in her crib, and her crib mobile.

Gabrielle doesn’t like baths, letting her mom sit down to a meal, her bouncer, her car seat, being in the car, the hours between 6 and 10 pm, or Marci getting in her face, holding her, or touching her.

First Day of Kindergarten

John’s first day of kindergarten was yesterday. He loved it! There are 20 children in his class. Among other things, he learned a few Spanish words and worked on writing uppercase and lowercase A’s. John was very happy to report that there are two recesses. He also loves having me pack a lunch for him.

John goes to a school on the other side of town and takes a school bus to and from school. Yesterday, when leaving school, the bus left before John could get on it. Thankfully, I made sure his teacher would get him to the bus to come home every day. She was able to put him on another bus and then they transferred him to the correct bus at the next school pick-up. It makes me really nervous having him ride the bus such a long way, but if anyone can handle it, John can. I asked him how the bus ride was and if he’d rather me drive him every day. He said he definitely wants to take the bus and says he loves all of the big windows.

Tomorrow is John’s first day of kindergarten and we are all excited for him. Tonight, in honor of the occasion, we enjoyed a back to school feast.

Gabrielle at the Market

Remember how I said that people were taking pictures of Gabrielle all day at the market? I tried to take her picture only to find out that my camera battery was dead. One person that wanted to take her picture had a huge nice camera, so I asked her if she would e-mail me some of her pictures. It turns out that she was a reporter for ABC 4 news. Here are the cute photos that she sent me. Thanks Annie!

1 Month Old

Gabrielle is one month old now. She is finally at the age where she is awake and more alert. She is usually so calm when she is awake. Unfortunately she is often crabby in the evening just in time for Chris to be home, so he hasn’t seen her sweet self as much as I have.

Gabrielle is not sleeping through the night. She wants to eat every three hours around the clock and is often wide awake between three and five a.m. If I’m lucky, I will get a nice five hour chunk of sleep, but her sleep is so random still, that I know not to count on it.

Gabrielle is growing fast! She has already outgrown the bathroom sink for her baths, though I occasionally still rinse her down in there. She also doesn’t mind being on her stomach (my other kids hated it). She is strong enough to lift her head and turn it side to side.

Gabrielle is always full of those precious newborn smiles, much to our delight. She loves to be held and snuggled and I am quick to oblige.

Gabrielle is so beautiful! At the farmers market this past Saturday, Gabrielle spent most of her time asleep on a chair. About ten random strangers came up and took her photo, and at least that many offered to buy her. Strange, who takes pictures of someone else's baby?

I am enjoying every second of this girl!

This girl is really growing up. Last week she went into a “big girl bed” instead of a crib. (She was more than happy to give her crib to Gabrielle.)

Also last week she was potty trained. She went into “big girl panties” on Sunday the 11th, and hasn’t had an accident since Tuesday. She still wears pull-ups to bed, but has woken up dry many of the nights this week.

I am so proud of how well she is doing and how well she is adjusting to the new addition to our family.

Gabrielle’s Birth

Here I am the night before Gabrielle was born. A huge a belly and a smile despite the fact that I was miserable being pregnant. And yes, Marci is picking her nose.

The day before Gabrielle was born, I spoke with my doctor about my appointment the next morning. He said that there was one spot available for an induction and it was the next day. I was more than happy to take it. This probably explains the huge smile on my face.

I called the hospital the next morning and thankfully, they weren’t too busy and they let me come in for the induction. I came into the hospital and was dilated to 5 cm and 70% effaced. I was started on pitocin at about 9:30 am. I started contracting and the attending anesthesiologist came in and started my epidural. Next they broke my water. Thanks to the epidural, I didn’t feel most of my contractions. A few hours later, I did start feeling a lot of pain in my pelvis and lower back. The doctor checked me again and I was at a 10 and it was time to push.

Just a side note. My mom and dad were at the hospital with me in addition to Chris. My in-laws are out of town serving missions in Australia, so they couldn’t be there (it was so sad having them missing!). Earlier my dad had complained that he had missed Marci’s birth. A bit before I was ready to push, he had gone to get some lunch. He came back with food, but had forgotten a fork. I told him to go out to the nurses desk and ask for one. When it was time to push, he was nowhere to be found. We were just discussing what to do, when he arrived, just in time!

Ok, back to the birth…

So I started pushing. I gave it one good push and the head was out. She had her little hand up under her chin, as if holding her head up, so the doctor told me to stop pushing. I was then instructed to push again slowly, which I did, and she was out. Really, it was like a push and a half and she was born. She arrived July 1st at 1:32 pm, after about 4 hours of labor.

Our hospital stay was fantastic. We didn’t have many visitors and it was so nice to have a ton of time with just our family to get to know the new baby.

For Marci, it was love at first sight. She just wanted to be involved in everything the baby was doing. The sweet aide let Marci help with Gabrielle’s first bath, and it was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen! Marci loved it!

John was really quiet at first. He didn’t express any emotion. He would hold the baby, but that was about it. Once we came home from the hospital, he really warmed up to her and now can’t wait to talk to her and hold her. He is really cute with her.

It is now two weeks later, and my recovery has been wonderful! Very little pain, and a husband who has really stepped up and taken care of everything. He has been so great with the older kids, and, I’ve only made dinner once since she was born. (Thank you Chris, RS sisters, family, and Shannon!)

I think that I speak for us all when I say that we are absolutely in love with this little girl!

Gabrielle is fitting in well. Her brother and sister really love her. Whenever she is awake, they are fighting over who gets to hold her first. They love to hug and kiss her, and Marci always wants Gabrielle to give her “bones.” If Gabrielle cries or fusses at all, Marci is very concerned and has to let me know that “Gabrielle needs me!” They are both the perfect little helpers.

4th of July Weekend

We had such a lovely weekend. Thankfully I have been feeling so great following Gabrielle’s birth, that I was able to get out and enjoy it.

Saturday, we had a little BBQ with Aaron and Marsha at their home. Sunday, we had a BBQ at my parents home with my family, then on Monday, we had the Langeland’s over for a BBQ at our house.

Yes, it may seem shocking that I had a party at my house just a few days post birth, but Chris did most of the work. He grilled the chicken, shucked all of the corn, set up everything, except for a bit of housework, he did it all. Thanks honey, it was so much fun!

Just an update…

I realize that I am a total slacker when it comes to blogging. It couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that I have a baby due in 3 1/2 weeks, my boy is out of school, I am still working at the hospital, and am now spending a ton of time working on my jewelry business.

The most exciting news of late, is that I was accepted into two farmers markets. I am at the Park City Farmers Market (in the Canyons Resort parking lot) every Wednesday from noon to 7 pm; and at the Downtown Salt Lake City Farmers Market (at Pioneer Park) each Saturday from 8am to 1pm. It has been so much fun! You should definitely come and visit me.

Thankfully I am in the phase of pregnancy where I have a ton of energy. This week, in addition to jewelry, I weeded my yard, planted my vegetable garden, planted a ton of flowers, cleaned out the fridge, made 9 batches of strawberry jam, cleaned the house, bought Marci a summer wardrobe, searched the city for the few things I need for this new baby, and worked three 12 hour shifts at the hospital. Wow! It makes me feel like superwoman when I type it all out like that!

My pregnancy has been pretty uneventful. I am still quite achy but healthy. I am to the point that I can’t wait to be done. I am due in 3 weeks and 6 days. Not that I am counting down the days or anything. I just looked up ways to help induce labor at home. It is incredibly tempting. I am really excited to meet this little girl.

One Sad, Sad Day

(Last Day of School With Teacher Anna)

Today was John’s last day of preschool. I didn’t think that I’d be this sad, but I am. John went to a charter school within our district where I was able to go in and co-op for three hours every week. This was the best money I’ve ever spent.

John’s teacher is Anna. When I went in for orientation, I was almost scared away. This lady is covered with tattoos and piercings. Really. I was especially shocked to see the naked lady on her upper arm. She was the last person I’d expect to be teaching preschool. She was so friendly and knowledgeable though, and she knew just what to say to a young mom sending her first born out into the world.

After our first meeting, I asked John what he thought of Anna. He just said “Anna is so silly.” And I knew that things would be fine. I realized that I am teaching John to be tolerant of others, no matter what their differences, so how could I be a hypocrite and not give this teacher a chance?

Can I just say how absolutely fantastic, beyond all my wildest expectations, wonderful Anna is?

She has completely changed my son into a polite, respectful, friendly, considerate boy. She has also helped me develop effective parenting skills. This may sound too good to be true, but it is not. I feel so ashamed for any doubts I had when I met her. What a blessing she has been!

Anna has been teaching for 16 years. In the morning before she teaches John’s class, she teaches a class of special needs kids. She also has a teenage autistic daughter that she home schools. And, in all of her spare time, she is a professional belly dancer. She teaches belly dancing classes and tours the country. Yeah, you’d have to be amazing to do all of this.

Next year, we will be attending a new school. I found out that John will be the only one from his class not attending the Open Classroom for kindergarten. I feel very sad to loose this amazing teacher, and all of the incredible kids that I have come to love.

John loves the bridge at this park. Every day on the way to and from school we drive by it. All year he’s been begging to stop here to play but being the busy mom that I am, I never stop. Today I am feeling especially bad about that.

Tomorrow is the last day of school, so we had to visit. We had so much fun! I am upset that I haven’t taken time to stop more often. We will definitely be visiting again.

Reevaluating Life

I have been moping about lately. I have been feeling so discouraged, overwhelmed, and depressed. I keep dwelling on things in my life that I really don’t have control over. Day after day of ruminating on such discouraging thoughts are bound to depress anyone.

It is time to pick myself up. To set new goals. To tidy up this mess I’ve been nestled in. To find joy in this journey.

Every Sunday on our drive home from church I ask John what he learned in class. Each week he says that he either didn’t learn anything or that he just doesn’t remember. Knowing that they learned about the resurrection of the Savior this week, I asked John about it. I was hoping that by mentioning the resurrection, he would tell me about class.

It didn’t help. He still said that he didn’t learn anything today. In frustration, I said “I think that I need to call your teacher and ask her why she isn’t teaching you anything.”

To which John replied “I think you need to call my brain and ask why it keeps forgetting.”

Celebrating 2 Years of Marci

In honor of Marci’s second birthday, I decided to follow her around a bit to document her life. Here are some scenes from her day.

After waking up (before sunrise) and snuggling in bed with mom for a while, Marci was allowed to have Fruit Loops for breakfast. A huge treat given that normally she is not allowed any sugar cereal. She is quite proficient at feeding herself by now, though a bib still is necessary.

She decided to do some serious writing after breakfast. I am amazed that she is already holding her pencil like an adult, and she is very focused when she “writes.” She is always excited when she makes real letters. She has successfully written an “M” and many “O’s.”

After breakfast she came along on some errands. We stopped at the party store and I let her pick out some plates and napkins for her party. She settled on a Disney Princess theme.

After the party store, we went into the pet store to see the animals. She especially loved the rats. Not knowing what they were, she called them “bunnies.” We were a bit disappointed that there were no puppies. They are among Marci’s favorite.

When we arrived home from running errands, it was time for lunch. Marci really loves oranges. They’d have been the entire lunch if I’d allowed it. Actually she is a great eater. She eats just about everything put in front of her. Also, she doesn’t like sippy cups but is great at drinking out of regular cups.

I had no intention of potty training Marci yet, but she has other ideas. Before the day was through, she used it three times of her own accord. I guess I’d better buy some “big girl” underwear.

After a nap at grandmas, playing with John, and some dinner, it was time for her party. I made her this chocolate cake with pink meringue frosting. The cake was so tall, she had to stand blow out the candles.

As the guests were arriving, she leaned forward to see who was coming in the front door. Unfortunately it was a bit too far and her cheek brushed the side of the cake. She was embarrassed when everyone laughed. She started crying. The tears were very short lived, and she was soon happy again.

She loved opening presents. (I hadn’t anticipated gifts as I’d planned the entire party the night before. Thanks guys!)

It was apparent that the crown and dress-up jewelry were her favorite. She had to walk around and tell everyone that she was a princess.

A wonderful day for a “big” girl.

We have been working really hard with John to teach him to not lash out in anger when things upset him. Instead to use his words to express himself and resolve the problem. This morning the kids were playing and I overheard this exchange from the next room:

“Marci! You just splashed water in my eye!” [Then in a more calm tone of voice] “Let me talk to you about that. How would you feel if I splashed water in your eye?”

No anger, no screaming, play resumed.

St. Patrick’s Day

We had such big plans for St. Patrick’s Day this year. John was so excited, he even went to sleep wearing a green shirt the night before. Unfortunately John woke up and spent the morning throwing up. We cancelled our trip to the zoo, and of course John had to miss school. The annoying thing is that John felt great by midmorning, and was eating normally. He was so disappointed that I didn’t let him go to school.

To make up for it, we had this wonderful Irish Stew for dinner followed by delicious rainbow cupcakes. For the cupcakes, I used this recipe and followed these directions, substituting homemade batter and Wilton food coloring gel. Everything was wonderful!

So, the day started a bit disappointing, but ended up great.

This morning, I was thinking that Marci needs some new hair accessories. She was wearing a cute little skirt, but had nothing in her hair. I am letting her bangs grow out, and they are at such an awkward length right now. She definitely needs something to hold them back.

I was thinking about making little flower clips from some pink felt I have left over from Halloween. As is typical, it is now dinner time, and I never made any.

While browsing my Reader this evening, I came across these darling little headbands. Such inspiration. I don’t know if I can resist buying a few. You probably want to visit Sprinkles on top for yourself, because there are too many cute things for me to post them all.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

This delightfully engaging story takes place in Jackson, Mississippi, during the early 1960's, the early years of the civil rights movement. Through this page turner, Stockett brings to life the behind the scenes happenings of black domestic servants working in white southern households.

You are transported back in time and into the lives of the three narrators: Miss Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, a liberal minded, prosperous, recent Ole Miss graduate; Aibileen who continually raises white children only to have them grow up and away from her; and Minny, the best cook in Jackson who isn't afraid to speak her mind even if it means upsetting the queen of the hive.

Miss Skeeter, a journalist for a local newspaper, is uncomfortable with the racial attitudes of the time. She secretly interviews black maids, compiling their stories for a book to be sent to an interested New York publisher. This controversial and potentially dangerous act is at first not supported by the black community but as Aibileen and Minny sign on, 10 others follow suit. Miss Skeeter is soon embraced by the black community.

While reading this book you may find yourself laughing out loud, as I did, wanting to get to know each character personally. I appreciate Stockett for artfully highlighting the value of these maids’ lives and the struggles likely faced during such tumultuous times.

G is for Girl

Last week, we took the kids with us to my doctors appointment. We had the ultrasound, and so far, everything looks great.

When I asked John if he was excited to have another sister, he replied “I already knew it’s a girl!” For some reason, I think that we all knew she was a girl, so it wasn’t really a surprise. It’s still nice to have it confirmed.

Unfortunately, she was keeping her hand up and not showing her face very well, so this is the best profile we were able to get.

Hopefully she will forgive me for posting her girl parts for all the world to see!

A Day of Love

John and I just returned from his first school Valentine party. He happily carried his bag full of valentines and treats into the house. Marci’s reaction to the sight wasn’t good.

Thankfully John’s a real sweetheart. We gave Marci her own bag to color and John happily divvied up his candy with her. He even gave her the Princess valentine he received. Marci couldn’t be happier. This is what love is all about.

P.S. They had face painting at the party and John came home with a spider on his forehead.

Let it Snow!

I am feeling that we haven’t had near enough snow here in SLC. At least not at my house. I have heard of great big snow storms, but for some reason, they seem to be passing my house completely. I am feeling deprived.

Marci’s First Haircut

In early December, John decided to cut Marci’s hair. He left the right side alone, but it was cut really short in the back, all the way to the nape and the left side was randomly chopped all over.

I didn’t find out about it until late that evening, after the kids were in bed. I immediately called Megan (my cousin and the BEST hair dresser in the state of Utah) in a panic. I told her that I would do ANYTHING if she would just fix Marci’s hair the next day.

The sweet saint saved the day. Megan came to my house and where she gave Marci the cutest little haircut you’ve ever seen. Really, unless you look really hard in just the right spot, you’d never know of the hair disaster (lucky for John).

Shhh! Don’t tell John, but I like it better now than ever!
